Mommy Makeover Series: Part 1

When it comes to my wife, I may be a bit biased but to me, she’s superwoman.  On top of work, extracurricular activities and everything in between, being a mom is a full time gig; as soon as a woman becomes a mother their focus is no longer on themselves but the wellbeing of their family.  For this reason I want to shine the spotlight back on all of you mothers out there and share a procedure that is all about you: the mommy makeover.

Due to the physical effects pregnancy and childbirth have on a woman’s body, no amount of diet and exercise can remedy the sagging breasts from breastfeeding or the weakened abdominal muscles in the stomach.  Mommy makeover is multi-faceted because it’s a combination of cosmetic surgery procedures performed at the same time.  From perkier breasts with a breast augmentation and breast lift to a tighter waistline with a tummy tuck, mommy makeover addresses multiple concerns at once.  An added benefit is that it also reduces your amount of required downtime versus if you had each procedure done one at a time.

In part one of my mommy makeover series I wanted to touch on some of the basics that make up a mommy makeover.  Below is a helpful guide breaking down some of main components that go into mommy makeover to help my patients regain their pre-baby body: tummy tuck, liposuction, breast reduction, breast lift and breast augmentation.

One important thing I can’t stress enough is for my mommy makeover patients to wait until after they are done having children before considering a mommy makeover, body contouring or breast enhancement procedures because the effects of pregnancy can reverse your results.  Stay tuned for part two of my mommy makeover series where I will go into more detail on the benefits of the different procedures I combine.  If you’re interested in mommy makeover surgery, or any of the other cosmetic procedures I perform, please contact Southern Plastic Surgery today.  For the most up-to-date plastic surgery news and specials be sure to connect with me, Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Mommy Makeover Surgery: Now’s the Time

Although Atlanta is still too cold for us to think about warm weather and our desired “beach bodies,” if you are looking to pursue cosmetic surgery, now is the perfect time to start planning in order to recover before the temperatures begin to heat up. Mommy makeover surgery is one or more body contouring procedures I specifically recommend undergoing during this time of year.

TummyTuckAs most new parents will attest, having a baby is one of the greatest gifts. Most mothers will also agree, it can also take a major toll on your body physically. I will often recommend a mommy makeover for women who are looking to tighten up their waistline or undergo complete body rejuvenation. It is essential for female patients to wait until after they are finished having children before considering mommy makeover as additional pregnancies can reverse your results. Additionally, it is important for you to be in overall good physical and mental health before undergoing any type of cosmetic procedure. During your consultation, we will discuss your personal cosmetic surgery goals and what customized procedures will be performed in order to give you the look you desire.

Typically, mommy makeover is a comprehensive combination surgery incorporating both breast and body contouring procedures. If you suffer from sagging breasts or have lost volume, a breast augmentation or breast lift can be performed. To sculpt the areas on the abdomen where skin and muscle has stretched, I use tummy tuck surgery to target excess fat and skin and re-tighten weakened abdominal muscles for a firmer, more contoured outcome. Additionally, I can combine liposuction to remove stubborn isolated pockets of fat and help sculpt the midsection as well as the thighs, hips, and arms. By combining surgeries, the amount of downtime is significantly less than if you had individual procedures. Depending on the procedures performed, during your mommy makeover, each person’s recovery time will undoubtedly differ. I advise all my patients to regularly schedule follow-up appointments with me in order to receive recommendations for minimizing the risks of complications.

The Link Between Obesity and Breast Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1 million women world-wide are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Breast cancer risk factors span from those that are not easily treated such as age and family history, to those that may be easily minimized by leading a healthy lifestyle. Though there are multiple factors that can contribute to cancer risk, body weight proves to have the strongest evidence linking it to cancer. Excess body weight contributes to as many as 1 out of 5 of all cancer-related deaths.

breast reconstruction in atlanta georgiaRecently, studies from both the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the World Cancer Research Fund concluded that there is substantial evidence that being obese or overweight can promote breast cancer following menopause. The study also found that women over the age of 18 who gained 60 or more pounds had double the risk of being diagnosed with post-menopausal breast cancer compared to women who lived physically active lives and had a lower body mass index.

Reaching an appropriate, healthy weight can often be challenging. However, it is important to maintain positive lifestyle habits to not only prevent your risk of life-threatening illnesses, but is also essential to maintaining plastic surgery results. While I do perform body contouring procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, and mommy makeover surgery to help patients achieve a slimmer, thinner contour, plastic surgery should not be a “quick-fix” but rather assist you in achieving your goals. I always promise that I will do my part to meet your desired cosmetic goals, but also place the utmost importance that you do your part to preserve a successful procedure outcome.
