This month marks the start of summer and things have already started heating up around the city as a lot of you will be heading out of town, enjoying more friend and family gatherings and heading outdoors to soak up a good dose of Vitamin D. Not only is June 21st the summer solstice but it also happens to be Father’s Day. The Southern Plastic Surgery team certainly wants to extend a very happy Father’s Day wish to all the special men in each of your lives and I hope you make their day extra special this year!
We understand that schedules can be tight this time of year and finding the best time to fit a surgical or nonsurgical procedure in can be tricky. Surprisingly enough, downtime can be quite minimal for several procedures we perform so you don’t miss out on the important events coming up this season! To kick off this month’s specials, let’s start with FDA-approved Restylane® Silk. When we first introduced Restylane® Silk to patients earlier this year, our patients were pleased with its ability to provide subtle plumping of the lips. When I say subtle I mean that it’s a “lighter” version of the original Restylane® facial filler due to the smaller granular substance that is able to get deeper into the delicate lines around the mouth. Patients can get that pouty-lip look but still avoid the commonly overdone “duck lips.” If you haven’t tried Restylane® or Restylane® Silk yet, check out our flyer for details on our treatment packages that are good now until June 30th, 2015.
Some of you may remember a few weeks ago I shared that I had the honor of speaking at the 2015 Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Meeting to a select group of doctors on the topic of tummy tucks (abdominoplasty). My scarpa fascia flap abdominoplasty technique has become a staple for helping patients achieve not only a flatter midsection, but one with curves and I’m hoping that I was able to encourage other doctors from all around the world to do their part in improving our tummy tuck patient’s results. By utilizing the scarpa fascia tummy tuck technique when performing tummy tucks, a more defined contour of the waistline (think along the lines of an hourglass shape).
Be sure to check out our flyers for more details on the SPS specials, plus Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center has a few Father’s Day specials you may want to take advantage of. If you have any questions regarding the specials or any of the reconstructive or cosmetic plastic surgery procedures I perform, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 770-622-9100. You can also stay connected with me, Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. We wish everyone has a great start to their summer season and hope to see many new and familiar faces very soon!
With each new year comes new statistical research within our plastic surgery culture. These statistics share interesting findings from shifts in surgical trends to the most favored cosmetic procedures performed. Body contouring procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck and mommy makeover remain some of the most popular surgeries among patients today, however, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) there are new trends emerging in the United States. In initial 2013 statistics released by ASAPS, buttock augmentation dramatically surged in popularity with a 58% increase in procedures performed over the past year.
Popular celebrities with a large presence on social media and television including Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj are most notably known for their curvy physiques and sculpted derrières. Today’s trends clearly show the increasing popularity for women desiring similar, more contoured figures not just in the waist and hips but also the buttocks. Double board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. David Whiteman performs buttock augmentation, also known as Brazilian butt lift, for his patients wishing to enhance the size and curve of their buttocks.
Brazilian butt lift is commonly performed through a fat transfer process which harvests unwanted fat from one area of the body to transfer to the buttocks. Dr. Whiteman first performs fat transfer using liposuction to remove fat cells through a cannula, or tiny hollow tube, and can remove fat from areas such as your thighs, back, hips or abdomen. The donated fat is next purified and re-injected into predetermined areas on your buttocks. By using a patient’s own fat during this shape-modifying procedure, it allows Dr. Whiteman to sculpt the injected fat into a more naturally enhanced buttock. Fat transfer is Dr. Whiteman’s preferred technique for butt augmentation as it significantly reduces the risk of complication that can be associated with the introduction of a foreign object into the body, such as implants.
Dr. Whiteman meets with each patient during a consultation to evaluate the amount of donated fat needed, the desired sites where the injections will go, as well as the number and depth of the injections when determining your desired plastic surgery results. Finding a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive knowledge and experience is very important when undergoing any cosmetic surgery procedure, not only to maximize your safety but to ensure long-lasting results.

In previous health and wellness blogs, double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman often discusses healthy eating habits and regular exercise routines for his body contouring patients. However, with over 20 years of experience performing procedures for all areas of the body including the face and breasts, he reminds patients that healthy lifestyles are also imperative to maintain facial cosmetic surgery results. A healthy lifestyle is necessary for overall health, and it is essential to prolong long-lasting results after plastic surgery.
Diet and exercise are still important for patients who undergo facial plastic surgery, but patients should also adopt a skincare regimen and avoid harmful habits such as smoking and excessive sunbathing. Many patients pursue procedures such as facelift and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to reduce the signs of aging. Proper skincare can improve facial surface appearance and texture as well as assist with healing and scarring from surgery. Patients should avoid smoking and sunbathing as they dehydrate skin and cause skin to be more damage-prone.
While surgery does not completely stop the aging process, minimally invasive facial rejuvenation and skincare products can keep skin healthy and vibrant. Dr. Whiteman provides non-invasive treatments such as Botox® and facial fillers to further reduce wrinkles and fine lines. He also offers skincare products at Southern Plastic Surgery, P.C. and skin treatments such as peels and fractionated laser resurfacing at Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center.
