What’s the Difference between a Mommy Makeover & Grammy Makeover?

Having options is great because in my opinion, it reduces the sense of restrictedness when having to pick among several things that we may truly want. Once women reach the point in their life when they’re finished with pregnancy/childbirth, or after years of waiting to finally decide to reclaim their youthful body from top to bottom, this is the ideal time to consider more comprehensive procedures. Two of the top most popular procedures among the 30 and over crowd (but keep in mind it’s not exclusive to this group by any means) has become the Mommy Makeover and Grammy Makeover procedures. Most notably known for combining multiple procedures into one procedure, these two offer great benefits for helping patients attain a younger-looking appearance, but what’s the difference between a Mommy Makeover and Grammy Makeover?

What’s the Difference between a Mommy Makeover & Grammy MakeoverMommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover got its name because it focuses on common areas of the body that physically change from the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and weight gain/loss. This procedure combines breast and body contouring procedures and patients can choose from:

  • Breast Augmentation – to increase the overall size of the breasts using breast implants
  • Breast Lift – to reduce excess skin and fat from drooping breasts and raising them to a higher, more proportionate, position on the chest (can also be combined with a breast augmentation)
  • Liposuction – to permanently remove accumulated fat cells and refine the shape of the midsection, thighs, chin, arms, and buttocks
  • Tummy Tuck – to remove excess skin and fat of the abdominal region, and also re-tighten muscles that have weakened or separated during pregnancy

Grammy Makeover

With maturity comes more noticeably greater effects of natural aging and gravity that contribute to deeper wrinkles, perpetually tired-looking appearances, under-eye bags, sagging skin, and more. For this reason, a Grammy Makeover extends beyond the four procedures mentioned above for the Mommy Makeover – this time, combining nonsurgical and surgical options for the face, breasts, and body. In addition to breast augmentation/lift, liposuction and tummy tucks, a Grammy Makeover can include:

  • Hand Rejuvenation w/ Radiesse® – temporarily plumps up skeletal thin skin on the back of the hand instantly with the cosmetic injectable Radiesse® (results can generally last 1-2 years)
  • Browlift – smoothes the skin above/around the eyes & on the forehead by repositioning sagging eyebrows and raising upper lids
  • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – removes excess fat, tissue, and skin around the eyes to give a more rested appearance
  • Facelift – tightens sagging skin and smoothes wrinkles on the face (mainly around the cheeks, neck, and jowls) and/or repositions facial tissue
  • Neck Lift – removes excess fat from the chin and neck, eliminates hanging, and tightens what’s remaining for a smoother finish
  • Arm Lift – removes extra skin and fat (targeting the dreaded bat wings) before tightening remaining skin for a toned appearance
  • Fat Transfer – uses liposuction to remove fat from a donor site (typically the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks) that is purified and re-injected into areas of the body that have lost volume, such as the face and buttocks

There are options for how you’d like your groceries bagged, which gas station you’ll fuel up at, what hair color you’d like to choose, and so much more – so why shouldn’t the same inclusion apply to plastic surgery? Not every cosmetic plastic surgery procedure allows the same type of customizing freedom like a Mommy Makeover or Grammy Makeover, but the appeal of being able to hand select the procedures that will go into your final plastic surgery results are something many patients really appreciate knowing they have the ability to do. Grammy Makeover for Arm & Hand Rejuvenation

True or false: signs of aging mainly affect the face.  If you answered false – congratulations, you know your signs of getting older!  As gravity and a combination of weight changes (increase and decrease), genetics and natural aging start to take shape, we often overlook other key areas of the body that can make a person look older than they really are.  In this edition of our Grammy makeover series I want to focus on two additional procedures to help get your pre-Grammy body back: the arms and the hands.

Arm Sculpting

The term bat wing is a ‘lovely little nickname’ to describe the nature of sagging skin that accumulates and droops downward on the arms.  When we experience significant changes in weight, skin that is stretched cannot be retightened no matter how many reps of curls, bench pressing or body sculpting you do.  Collagen also inherently breaks down as we get older, adding to that sagging appearance that occurs to the arms.  Regardless of how localized fat and excess skin accumulates, the solution remains the same: arm lift, or bracioplasty as we say in the medical world.  Depending on the extent of your lax skin and remaining tissue, there are several incision techniques I utilize to help hide any visible scarring beneath the arm.  The actual arm lift procedure consists of removing loose skin, addressing that stubborn fat and smoothing over the remaining skin to restore a more proportionally-toned look to the arms.  Arm lift results should look as natural as possible but the work shouldn’t stop there!  With just about any cosmetic procedure, plastic surgery results can be maintained with proper diet and exercise regimens to reduce the chance of reversing results you’re already happy with.  Grammy makeover patients already have their hands full with keeping up with the grans – why add worrying about your results to your laundry list of priorities?

Hand Rejuvenation

Sure you could have the face of a 35 year old but what do your hands say about your age?  Think about how often our hands are exposed to harsh environmental damage (sun damage specifically), which can contribute to speeding up the aging process.  As the collagen production slows down and the skin begins to weaken, wrinkles and veins become more prominent – making the hands appear almost skeletal.  FDA-approved Radiesse® for hand rejuvenation is the nonsurgical solution to re-plumping the delicate, thinning skin.  Cosmetic injectables have helped men and women fill prominent areas of the face (like the cheeks and lips) but Radiesse® is the first of its kind to get the stamp of approval for use specifically on the hands.  Hand rejuvenation treatments are relatively quick and don’t require downtime following treatment.  Once we identify key parts of the hand that could use a boost, I’ll administer Radiesse® injections and gently massage the solution into the hands.  The massaging part helps to smooth out bumps and make sure that we adequately cover the depressed portions on the back of the hand to make the veins and tendons appear less noticeably.  Radiesse® for hand rejuvenation results last generally 1-2 years, with touch ups encouraged to keep your results lasting longer.

When you break down all of the procedures Grammy makeover patients have to choose from, you may notice that the possibilities really are endless; it’s your procedure, your way!  So far we have covered the facial rejuvenation components of Grammy makeover and in our next part we will explore the various body and breast procedures that are also below the neck.  If you’re a Grammy who’s interested in exploring Grammy makeover opportunities, please don’t hesitate to contact Southern Plastic Surgery for your complimentary consultation.  Stay connected with me, double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Whiteman, on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for more Grammy and mommy makeover news and updates.

Introducing the Grammy Makeover Series

Some of you may be familiar with the popular mommy makeover procedure.  Best known as a combination of breast and body contouring procedures (performed in one comprehensive surgery), mommy makeovers address common physical changes mothers can experience after pregnancy and childbirth to restore a pre-baby body.  Now, we’d like to introduce to you the Grammy makeover – the newest combo procedure helping grandmothers and mature women everywhere get their pre-child/grandchild body back! You can think of a Grammy makeover as a supercharged mommy makeover – offering a wide variety of face, hand, arm, breast and body contouring procedures to combine into one procedure.  After we determine your cosmetic goals, we’ll take a look at the procedures that will help you achieve your ultimate plastic surgery results.  For part one of my Grammy makeover series, I would like to start by covering some of the options that Grammy makeover patients have.

Grammy-Makeover

Grammy makeovers can address a multitude of concerns.  From creating a well-rested look by eliminating fat pockets and excess tissue with eyelid surgery to saying goodbye to sagging skin and wrinkles with a neck lift or facelift, Grammy makeovers can start with breathing new life into the face.  To compliment your overall look, cosmetic injectables like Botox® or facial fillers like Juvéderm® may be a non-surgical addition to your Grammy makeover.  As we head to the breasts, we will evaluate their look, in relation to your body frame (are they sagging, too big, too small or all the above?) and determine which breast enhancement procedure will give you bigger (or smaller), perkier breasts – depending on your preference.  If “bat wings” keep you hiding your arms, you may consider an arm lift to remove the extra skin and create a more toned appearance.  To create a sculpted midsection, free of a stomach pooch or weakened abdominal muscles, tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty) using the scarpa fascia technique may be what you need.  Finally, let’s not forget about the hands; what better way to complete your Grammy makeover than with hand rejuvenation using Radiesse®?  What’s unique about the Grammy makeover is that it’s 100% customizable; for you and only you.  There isn’t a pre-determined package to limit the type of results you want; the combination possibilities with a Grammy makeover are endless!

As your double board-certified surgeon, I want to help restore the face and body to its once youthful look.  Natural-looking plastic surgery results that highlight each patient’s beautiful existing features are important, so creating a surgical plan that best suits them uniquely is vital.  As an added bonus just as with mommy makeovers, Grammy makeovers have low overall complication rates (this is largely in part to working with an experienced, board-certified surgeon because not all doctors have the same expertise and skillset).  Grammy makeovers also offer the same benefit as mommy makeovers in regards to what patients save – time and money.  By combining procedures into one, patients reduce their overall recovery time (imagine having 3-5 separate surgeries spanned over several months, or years, versus once) as well as extra costs associated with surgical fees that can certainly add up with each individual procedure.

Plastic surgery doesn’t have to be a hard-reaching goal; you just need to know your options!  If you’ve been considering a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure or would like to learn more about the Grammy makeover, please contact Southern Plastic Surgery (SPS).  Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks as we discuss more details on the Grammy makeover.  Be sure to also follow SPS on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for the latest updates.
