What’s the Difference between a Mommy Makeover & Grammy Makeover?

Having options is great because in my opinion, it reduces the sense of restrictedness when having to pick among several things that we may truly want. Once women reach the point in their life when they’re finished with pregnancy/childbirth, or after years of waiting to finally decide to reclaim their youthful body from top to bottom, this is the ideal time to consider more comprehensive procedures. Two of the top most popular procedures among the 30 and over crowd (but keep in mind it’s not exclusive to this group by any means) has become the Mommy Makeover and Grammy Makeover procedures. Most notably known for combining multiple procedures into one procedure, these two offer great benefits for helping patients attain a younger-looking appearance, but what’s the difference between a Mommy Makeover and Grammy Makeover?

What’s the Difference between a Mommy Makeover & Grammy MakeoverMommy Makeover

Mommy Makeover got its name because it focuses on common areas of the body that physically change from the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and weight gain/loss. This procedure combines breast and body contouring procedures and patients can choose from:

  • Breast Augmentation – to increase the overall size of the breasts using breast implants
  • Breast Lift – to reduce excess skin and fat from drooping breasts and raising them to a higher, more proportionate, position on the chest (can also be combined with a breast augmentation)
  • Liposuction – to permanently remove accumulated fat cells and refine the shape of the midsection, thighs, chin, arms, and buttocks
  • Tummy Tuck – to remove excess skin and fat of the abdominal region, and also re-tighten muscles that have weakened or separated during pregnancy

Grammy Makeover

With maturity comes more noticeably greater effects of natural aging and gravity that contribute to deeper wrinkles, perpetually tired-looking appearances, under-eye bags, sagging skin, and more. For this reason, a Grammy Makeover extends beyond the four procedures mentioned above for the Mommy Makeover – this time, combining nonsurgical and surgical options for the face, breasts, and body. In addition to breast augmentation/lift, liposuction and tummy tucks, a Grammy Makeover can include:

  • Hand Rejuvenation w/ Radiesse® – temporarily plumps up skeletal thin skin on the back of the hand instantly with the cosmetic injectable Radiesse® (results can generally last 1-2 years)
  • Browlift – smoothes the skin above/around the eyes & on the forehead by repositioning sagging eyebrows and raising upper lids
  • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – removes excess fat, tissue, and skin around the eyes to give a more rested appearance
  • Facelift – tightens sagging skin and smoothes wrinkles on the face (mainly around the cheeks, neck, and jowls) and/or repositions facial tissue
  • Neck Lift – removes excess fat from the chin and neck, eliminates hanging, and tightens what’s remaining for a smoother finish
  • Arm Lift – removes extra skin and fat (targeting the dreaded bat wings) before tightening remaining skin for a toned appearance
  • Fat Transfer – uses liposuction to remove fat from a donor site (typically the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks) that is purified and re-injected into areas of the body that have lost volume, such as the face and buttocks

There are options for how you’d like your groceries bagged, which gas station you’ll fuel up at, what hair color you’d like to choose, and so much more – so why shouldn’t the same inclusion apply to plastic surgery? Not every cosmetic plastic surgery procedure allows the same type of customizing freedom like a Mommy Makeover or Grammy Makeover, but the appeal of being able to hand select the procedures that will go into your final plastic surgery results are something many patients really appreciate knowing they have the ability to do. The Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures of 2015

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has spoken – the cosmetic plastic surgery statistics are in and we now know just how many patients contributed to the whopping 15,908,330 procedures performed in the United States last year alone (that number includes both surgical and minimally-invasive procedures). While we still see the trend of nonsurgical treatments surging, surgical plastic surgery collectively saw a 2% increase since 2015 (sitting nicely with just over 1.7 million total cosmetic procedures performed). In a field where breast enhancement long dominated the charts, let’s look at the most popular plastic surgery procedures of 2015, and more specifically, why these procedures may have experienced the surge they did.

2015-plastic-surgery-statistics-infographicWhat I found most interesting when checking out the stats is that the biggest increase in popularity occurred among body contouring and male plastic surgery procedures. It doesn’t give any specific reason behind this shift but I would guess that it has to do with a wider acceptance of elective procedures on a world-wide scale, an influx in men who see many of the same benefits women see as pertaining to the positive outcomes plastic surgery can promote, or it could merely be that people are finding plastic surgery more affordable with a greater level of attainability than ever before. Whatever the case may be, liposuction, tummy tuck, and male breast reduction took the most improved prizes this year:

Liposuction

  • Statistics: 222,051 procedures were performed in 2015, a 5% increase from 210,552 last year.
  • What it treats: Small amounts of fat located on the stomach, legs, back, love handles, chest, saddlebags, arms, buttocks, chin, and even knees and around the ankles.
  • How it works: Liposuction is not a weight loss tool but it works to sculpt the body by removing fat that won’t seem to budge with proper diet and exercise. Using a very thin tube, called a cannula, inserted into small incisions in the skin, fat deposits are targeted and physically removed with a suction-like method so the treated area on the body can no longer accumulate fat.
  • Ideal candidates: Men and women both can benefit from this body contouring procedure and patients who have unwanted, isolated pockets of fat can most benefit from liposuction results (and those who want to go the nonsurgical route – SculpSure™ is the newest fat reduction technology system to produce liposuction-like results, in half the time as other outdated nonsurgical fat reduction systems, without the required downtime).

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

  • Statistics: 127,967 procedures were performed in 2015, a 9% increase from 117,158 last year.
  • What it treats: Areas of concern around the abdomen including stubborn fat, weakened abdominal muscles (tummy pooch), and/or excess skin on the lower part of the body.
  • How it works: The main objective for any tummy tuck result is to create a flatter abdomen. First incisions are made in the lower region of the abdominal (imagine a line drawn between the hips horizontally; allowing scars to be easily hidden underneath underwear or bikini bottoms), then loose skin and unwanted fat are removed, and if needed, followed by repairing the weakened abdominal muscles. As added benefit to my tummy tuck patients, I have finessed a specialized tummy tuck technique called the Scarpa Fascia technique which gives me the ability to create a more hourglass shape for patients (once only achievable by combining liposuction). The waistline is shapelier thanks to more curvature and definition of the abdomen, recovery time is quicker, and the stomach flatter.
  • Ideal candidates: Patients in generally good health, mothers who have finished having children (because additional pregnancies could reverse a patient’s tummy tuck results), or men and women who have lost significant weight and are looking to shed the extra hanging skin make optimal tummy tuck candidates.

Male Breast Reduction

  • Statistics: 27,456 procedures were performed in 2015, a 5% increase from 26,175 last year.
  • What it treats: Gynecomastia – a condition among men that causes overly large breasts.
  • How it works: Male breast reduction works by first removing the extra fat in the breasts, addressing excess tissue and loose skin, and then combining liposuction to further produce a flattened chest.
  • Ideal candidates: Men who are not happy with the appearance of their breasts and want to improve the proportion of their chest in relation to their overall physique see great benefit from male breast reduction.

If I had to guess, I imagine these trends will only continue to grow as more and more people become familiar with the life-changing aspects of plastic surgery and as advancements in plastic surgery technology and techniques continue to exponentially improve. How Long Does It Take To Recover From Mommy Makeover?

Our time is valuable and for many of my hard-working patients, extended recovery time is not ideal. One of the most popular topics I generally cover during consultations is how long it will take to recover once the surgery has been successfully performed. While you have to keep in mind that every person’s body will heal differently, I’ve come up with an average timeline for recovery for my patients whether they choose facial rejuvenation, breast enhancement, and body contouring procedures. Since this month’s featured procedure is the ever-popular Mommy Makeover – if you had to answer how long does it take to recover from Mommy Makeover, what would you guess?

In case you’re not familiar, let’s start with the benefits of a Mommy Makeover:

  • Can help restore a pre-baby physique for mothers who’ve experienced changes to their body during/after carrying their child.
  • Even if you’re not a mother, Mommy Makeovers can benefit patients who have experienced physical changes to their body from aging and/or significant weight gain/loss.
  • A combination procedure that typically includes body contouring (tummy tuck and liposuction) and breast enhancement (breast augmentation or breast lift).
    • Since the procedures are performed simultaneously during the Mommy Makeover, you only have to go through one comprehensive recovery process versus first procedure then heal, second procedure then heal, etc.
  • This is an outpatient procedure meaning, you’re in and out the same day as your procedure (since you don’t have to stay in the hospital AND you’re combining procedures it means you’re not paying double the required hospital fees – such as anesthesia, surgical fees, and medication).
  • Natural-looking Mommy Makeover results will reveal a slimmer, more-contoured waistline and breasts that are not only proportionate to your frame, but also perky and youthful.

What should your expectations be regarding Mommy Makeover recovery?

The best thing you can do for yourself is to follow the pre and post-operative instructions I send you home with. I’ve heard time and time again from patients that the overall experience was a lot less strenuous than they may have assumed. In my over 22 years of experience as a double-board certified plastic surgeon, I firmly believe in giving my patient’s all the tools they need to increase their overall happiness with their results. Using highly-specialized surgical techniques (like the Scarpa Fascia Advancement technique for tummy tucks that I use to specifically reduce recovery time for my patients), combined with diligent effort from the patient to follow the recovery recommendations I provide, you’re more likely to increase your overall success with your procedure.
