No two tummy tuck procedures are ever truly the same. Depending on the patient, their specific needs, the exact surgical method utilized, and other mitigating factors, the post-surgery recovery period after a tummy tuck can vary. However, there are some things that do remain consistent, including what we recommend to do in the days following tummy tuck surgery.
For patients considering tummy tuck surgery, we recommend following these simple steps in order to promote the smoothest, quickest, and most comfortable post-surgery recovery period:
- Make sure to walk around immediately following surgery and continue to do so in the days following surgery to promote healthy circulation, but avoid any strenuous physical activity, especially high impact, abdominal exercises or heavy lifting, for 4 weeks following surgery.
- Keep up with any prescribed pain medications, antibiotics, and other medications as directed.
- Apply any given topical creams to the incision area to help promote good healing and scar reduction.
- Make sure to wear a compression garment to help reduce post-surgical swelling and discomfort in the days following your tummy tuck.
- Keep the incision area clean and dry, while resisting the use of hydrogen peroxide or alcohol, which can slow healing.
- Do not smoke or use any other nicotine products (including vaping) in the weeks before and after your tummy tuck.
Recovery Is Essential To Your Final Results
The most important thing that anyone can do to promote the best and longest-lasting tummy tuck surgery results is to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon and follow their advice regarding recovery as closely as possible. And don’t hesitate to call your surgeon if you have any questions or concerns.
