Gynecomastia, or enlargement of the male breasts that leads to the appearance of “man boobs”, is a common affliction that affects men of all ages. Although it can be confused with fat in the breast area, true gynecomastia is characterized by an excess of glandular breast tissue. Even if it does not pose any physical danger, gynecomastia can wreak havoc on a guy’s self-esteem. Thankfully, male breast reduction provides a great way for men to improve the contour of their chest once and for all. During surgery, I am able to reduce the male breast tissue to enhance the pectoral muscles and create a more masculine physique. To help my patients get a better understanding of what this excellent body contouring procedure can and cannot do, below I weigh in on a few common statements found online about male breast reduction and gynecomastia.
Gynecomastia That Occurs During Your Youth Can Sometimes Go Away On Its Own
This is true. It’s normal for gynecomastia to occur in infant and pubertal boys. This is known as physiologic gynecomastia and it typically goes away on its own over time. It’s quite common for younger men to experience some degree of breast enlargement due to hormonal fluctuations. In some cases, gynecomastia that develops during puberty can persist into someone’s adult life. This is referred to as persistent pubertal gynecomastia. In these cases, male breast reduction may be necessary to reduce the enlarged breasts.
Gynecomastia Can Be Successfully Treated with Exercise
Unfortunately, this is false. Since gynecomastia is typically caused by an imbalance of hormones and not excess fat, exercise will not be able to treat gynecomastia. Even performing exercises specifically intended to tone the chest will only be able to help so much. No exercise will be able burn off extra breast tissue, meaning male breast reduction surgery is the only way to truly eliminate gynecomastia.
You Will Immediately Notice the Results of Male Breast Reduction
This is also true. Your male breast reduction results will be visible immediately following your procedure. Over time, your results will only improve as post-surgical swelling goes down and any incision scars left begin to fade. It may take between 3-6 months for your final results to reveal themselves, though this can vary from patient to patient.
