Tummy TuckAccumulating aesthetic imperfections like loose skin and excess fat is perfectly normal as we age. And while aging can inevitably affect areas all over the body, some areas may be especially vulnerable to these unfortunate changes. The abdomen would certainly be in this category. Whether it be due to pregnancy, weight fluctuation, or natural aging through the years, it can be difficult to maintain a trim and shapely midsection. Tummy tuck surgery is designed to address this area specifically. To help my patients gain a better understanding of what this procedure is (and is not) capable of, I wanted to discuss a few true and false statements about tummy tuck surgery.

True or False: There Will Be A Scar Following Your Tummy Tuck

This is true. Post-surgery scarring is an unavoidable aspect of cosmetic surgery and the tummy tuck is no exception. After undergoing a tummy tuck, a horizontal scar running across the lower abdomen should be expected. However, I make sure to do my best to place my incision below the belly button to ensure that any scar will be concealed under clothing, underwear and swimsuit bottoms. Additionally, tummy tuck scarring will fade over time and be less obvious with proper care.

True or False: A Tummy Tuck Can Only Trim The Abdomen

This is false. In many cases, a tummy tuck procedure can be incredibly helpful for patients who are concerned about excess skin and/or fat on their sides that create the appearance of flanks or “love handles.” I may use the extended tummy tuck technique in cases where patients are counting on this result.

True or False: Surgical Drains May Not Be Necessary After A Tummy Tuck

This is true. I perform several different tummy tuck surgery methods based on the specific needs of the patient I am currently treating. This includes the drainless tummy tuck technique. A drainless tummy tuck uses multiple layers of sutures to seal the incision area, and removes the need for post-surgical drains. This can help certain patients by cutting down on the post-surgery recovery period.

Undergoing a tummy tuck can be an excellent way to help achieve the body contour you desire. Hopefully these answers helped clear up any potential misconceptions about the procedure for patients who are curious about rejuvenating their appearance.
