In the world of plastic surgery, there is no such thing as skipping steps. While instant results and gratification would be great, this simply is not reality. Plastic surgery is a process, and this process begins with a pre-surgery consultation appointment. This appointment is a critical time for patients to both better understand their plastic surgery procedure options, and even more importantly, make sure they have found the right plastic surgeon to perform their surgery. Today, I thought it would be helpful for me to provide prospective breast augmentation patients a simple guide to help them prepare for their pre-surgery consultations.
Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that is performed to help women enhance the size and volume of their natural breasts. Much like every patient is unique, every breast augmentation consultation is unique as well. Everyone will inevitably have their questions about their procedure and how it can help them achieve their aesthetic goals, but some general baseline information can still be extremely helpful. Which is why I am happy to present the following list of questions that anyone should ask during their consult:
- Are you board-certified in plastic surgery (and specifically not in “cosmetic surgery”)?
- How long have you been performing breast augmentation procedures?
- What are the different kinds of breast implants and what are their advantages?
- What implant size, shape, texture, and incision placement site would you personally recommend for me and why?
- Should I combine my breast augmentation with a breast lift?
- Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation with fat transfer?
- What kind of anesthesia will be used during my surgery?
- How can I conceal post-surgery scarring after my breast augmentation?
- Will I need to stay in the hospital following my surgery? And at which facilities do you have hospital privileges?
- Do you have any before and after photos from other breast augmentation patients you have performed the surgery on?
- How can I prepare for my breast augmentation?
- How much downtime for recovery will I need following my surgery?
