breast-recovery-femaleWhen plastic surgery comes up in casual conversation, the breasts are often the first thing that many people think of. And as the most recent plastic surgery statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) show us, there is good reason for this. This report, released annually, indicated that cosmetic breast surgery has remained exceedingly popular over the last calendar year. However, there are a lot of interesting tidbits in the report that I thought my patients would appreciate. That’s why I am happy to share some of the more intriguing breast procedure statistics.

Breast Augmentation

  • Breast augmentation was not just the most popular cosmetic breast procedure, but also the most popular plastic surgery of all for the third consecutive year.
  • It was the most in-demand cosmetic surgery for women in the 18-34-year-old demographic as well as women between the ages of 35-50.
  • Despite its popularity, the number of breast augmentation procedures performed last year (280,692) has declined compared to the total performed 5 years ago (314,535).

Breast Lift

  • Breast lift surgery was the second most common cosmetic breast procedure and the third most common of all cosmetic surgeries last year.
  • Unlike breast augmentation, the number of breast lifts performed annually has steadily risen over the last 5 years.
  • Nearly half of all breast lift procedures were performed on women between 35-50 years old.

Breast Reduction

  • 86,543 breast reduction procedures were performed on women in the US last year.
  • While that figure is considerably lower than the number of breast augmentation surgeries performed, the 41% increase over the last 5 years combined with the decrease in augmentation procedures indicates a growing trend towards smaller, more natural-looking breasts.

Fat Transfer for the Breasts

  • Fat transfer procedures for the breasts continue to increase in popularity annually.
  • The 37% increase in annual procedures performed indicates that the prevalence of fat transfer will only continue to grow in coming years.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)

  • Male breast reduction surgery was the second most commonly performed cosmetic surgery for men, behind only liposuction.
  • This procedure made up over 20% of all plastic surgery procedures for male patients last year.
  • Male breast reduction is very in-demand with younger men, as 46% of total procedures last year were for guys between 18-34.
