Part of my duty as a plastic surgeon is tailoring each procedure that I perform to the specific needs and preferences of each individual patient. This can sometimes mean utilizing certain techniques that may not necessarily be right for everyone. Ethnic rhinoplasty certainly fits into this designation. The term “ethnic rhinoplasty” refers to specialty surgical techniques that I use to help patients of different ethnic groups, depending on their facial structure and skin.
It’s important to know that “ethnic rhinoplasty” is not an all-encompassing term and different ethnic rhinoplasty techniques exist for patients of different ethnicities. For example, some African American patients experience a “flat nose”, which may require rebuilding the bridge of the nose to create a more defined appearance. Some Asian rhinoplasty patients have smaller or shorter noses that may obstruct the air path and cause breathing problems. It’s also crucial to remember that the purpose of ethnic rhinoplasty is not to erase the more culturally-specific characteristics of a person’s face, but to slightly alter them while preserving the patient’s cultural identity.
Good candidates for an ethnic rhinoplasty procedure include:
- Non-caucasian patients who are unsatisfied with the appearance of their nose
- People whose noses have grown and reached their full adult size (no children or minors)
- Individuals in good mental and physical health who maintain realistic expectations about their procedure and potential results
In the following video, I discuss my extensive experience performing ethnic rhinoplasty procedures and how this surgery can help patients rejuvenate their facial appearance:
>If you are interested in modifying the appearance of your nose, you may be a candidate for rhinoplasty or ethnic rhinoplasty. However, sitting down for an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns is essential to determine the right surgery path for your needs. I am currently offering HIPAA compliant tele-consultations during the Coronavirus pandemic to help address any questions or concerns prospective patients may have during this time.
